IF YOU'D BEEN THERE

(Set To Music)

About two thousand years ago,
If with two trav'lers you had been,
You might have been the one to ask
A place to rest them at the Inn.

You might have been the one to find
The cattle stall, the bed of hay
Where, wrapped about in swaddling clothes,
So quietly the Baby lay.

And on that night, long years ago,
If with the shepherds you had been,
You would have heard the heav'nly host
Say, "Peace on earth, good will to men!"

If with the shepherds you had sat
That marvelous and awesome night,
You would have heard the voices sweet --
You would have seen the wondrous sight!

If with the Wise Men from the East
You, too, had traveled from afar,
You'd know how greatly they rejoiced
To find the Child beneath the Star!

The ever watching now was past
And fear of Herod could not dim
The realization of their hopes,
The joy they felt when they found Him.

But wait, my friend! You look so sad!
I thought I heard you say,
"I missed it all -- I wasn't there
When they found Jesus Christ that day."

The tidings that the angels brought
Have grown still sweeter through the years
To all the souls who trust in Him
To wipe away all doubts and fears.

The message still rings out today --
Just listen to the angel's voice:
"For unto YOU is born this day
A Saviour" . . . Now with us rejoice!
