THE LAST LEAF

In Memory Of My Brother
RAYMOND LAMAR CARAWAY

Today I saw the last leaf fall
Beneath the hick'ry tree
Where just a few short weeks ago
You sat and talked with me.
We talked of life -- we talked of death
And of eternity;
Of dreams and plans that we had shared
That now would never be.

The leaves were green that shaded us
When last we shared that view
Of sunbeams dancing on the waves
Beneath a sky so blue.
We reminisced of days gone by
And friends that we had known;
Of life and all its mystery
And time, so quickly flown.

With grateful hearts for life we'd shared
Upon this earth below,
We wondered still why you, so young,
Should be the first to go.
We thanked our God for grace to bear
The grief of parting pain,
For faith through Christ our Lord to know
That we would meet again.

You knew I wished you must not go --
I knew you yearned to stay;
And silent moments spoke for us
The words we could not say.
I watched that leaf come tumbling down
To rest beneath the tree,
And longed once more to be with you
Since you can't be with me.
