Have you, like the psalmist, ever wondered why man is the only being Jesus died for? Cats, dogs, and almost everything honor God more than man does. The Holy Ghost spoke and Isaiah wrote, "The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider" (Isa. 1:3).
Then why is God so mindful of man? Man is the only being that can receive redemption -- not angels, birds, animals, etc. Why? Man is body (Gen. 2:7); man has a spirit that gives life to the body (Gen. 2:7); and man is a soul (Gen. 2:7). The soul is the person, having intelligence, knowledge, wisdom, and choice, etc. The soul can be separated from the body, and the body can be separated from the spirit (Heb. 4:12). Man is a three-fold being; thus, man is a trinity.
Does the soul depart from the body at death? Yes. "as her (Rachel's) soul was in departing, (for she died)" (Gen. 35:18).
When the soul of a Christian is absent from the body, where is it? Absent from the body, present with the Lord (II Cor. 5:8).
After death, is the soul (person) conscious or unconscious? "I saw under the altar the souls (KJV) (persons -- The Emphatic Diaglott) of them that were slain" (Rev. 6:9). They questioned God (Rev. 6:10). They were given robes -- the Lord talked to them (Rev. 6:11).
When the soul of an unbeliever departs at death, where does it go? The place of torment (notice: "place" -- singular; Greek: Hades; KJV: hell) (Luke 16:28). After death, the unbeliever has most if not all five senses.
When a person dies, where does the spirit go? The spirit shall return unto God (Eccl. 12:7). Are the soul and spirit buried or put into graves? No.
What happens to the body at death? Then shall the dust return to the earth (Eccl. 12:7), so only the body is buried. Jesus taught that all that are in the graves (the bodies) shall hear his voice and shall come forth (John 5:28-29). The saved shall have their own bodies (I Cor. 15:38).
Did Jesus come forth in His flesh? "a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have" (Luke 24:39).
Did Jesus have blood in His resurrected body? No. Jesus taught "by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us" (Heb. 9:12).
How did Jesus have life after His resurrection? He was quickened (made alive) by the Spirit (I Pet. 3:18). We shall be like him (I John 3:2).
REMEMBER: "One" cannot be separated; "One" can be broken into pieces. The body, soul, and spirit can be separated -- thus man is a trinity (three in one).
Did Jesus and some of the New Testament writers teach that man is a two-fold being? "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy BOTH soul and body in hell" (Matt. 10:28).
How many is "both" -- one, two, or more? Can man kill the soul? Does "destroy" mean to cease to exist? No. Nothing that exists ever ceases to exist. Example: Burn something with fire and it just turns into ashes, smoke, and other chemicals.
Please read prayerfully and carefully John 3:1-12. Jesus discusses with Nicodemus the flesh and spirit birth (John 3:4). Mother's womb: flesh; born of water: flesh. This could not be baptism because baptism is never referred to as a birth but as a burial (Rom. 6:4, Col. 2:12) and as a planting (Rom. 6:5). If baptism is a birth and we have a spiritual birth, Jesus would have needed to say, "Ye must be born again and again." The person who has a birth by water (flesh) must have a spiritual birth in order to enter into the kingdom of God.
Jesus speaks of earthly things (flesh) and heavenly things (spirit). Man is a two-fold being.
Please read Rom. 7:15-25. "For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing" (Rom. 7:18). "For I delight in the law of God after the inward man" (Rom. 7:22). "So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin" (Rom. 7:25b).
"For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh" (Gal. 5:17). "And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts" (Gal. 5:24).
"Whosoever is born of God doth NOT commit sin" (I John 3:9). Remember: FLESH is born of FLESH. SPIRIT is born of SPIRIT (John 3:6). "though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day" (II Cor. 4:16). Is a human being an "outward man" and an "inward man"? Can one perish while the other is renewed?
