According To The Scriptures:

IS THERE A COMMAND IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

TO KEEP THE SABBATH DAY HOLY?

There is no command in the 27 books of the New Testament for the church to "remember the sabbath day to keep it holy". The command in the Old Testament to keep the sabbath day holy stated that it was a sign between God and Israel.

"And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you...Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.  It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed" (Exo. 31:12-18).

ARE WE TO KEEP THE SABBATH DAY HOLY?

Did Jesus ever attend a religious service on Sunday?

After Jesus was resurrected, He met with His disciples on two occasions that are recorded in the Bible, and both times it was on the first day of the week (Sunday).

"Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week [Sunday], when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you" (John 20:19).

"And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you" (John 20:26).

This was also on Sunday

There are two occasions where it is recorded that the disciples received the Holy Spirit in a special way.

"And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost" (John 20:22).

On Pentecost they were baptized with the Holy Ghost. This also happened on the first day of the week (Sunday) (Acts 2:1-4).

One of the greatest truths ever learned was on one of those occasions. Jesus has a body of flesh, bones, and Spirit.

"Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have" (Luke 24:39).

"For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened [made alive] by the Spirit" (I Pet. 3:18).

Since "we shall be like him" (I John 3:2), we will also have flesh and bones in our resurrected bodies , made alive by the Spirit (instead of blood).

There is no record that I can find of Jesus, after His resurrection, ever worshipping on the sabbath.

"And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight" (Acts 20:7).

I believe they were worshipping the Lord (in a religious service) -- and this was on Sunday, the first day of the week!

"Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come" (I Cor. 16:2).

Again, this is Sunday -- the first day of the week! We are going to face God's Word in the judgment.

"He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day" (John 12:48).

The church was never commanded to keep the sabbath as a holy day. We are not to be judged in "respect...of the sabbath days" (Col. 2:16). No one can find a worship service where Jesus worshipped on the sabbath day after His resurrection. Therefore, I will continue to worship on the first day of the week -- Sunday!

"For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth" (Rom. 10:4).

The law is spoken of in past tense in the following Scriptures:
  • "In the end of the sabbath" (Matt. 28:1).
  • "And when the sabbath was past" (Mark 16:1).
  • "The law was [past tense]" (Gal. 3:24).
  • "But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith..." (Gal. 3:11-12).
  • "If righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain" (Gal. 2:21).
  • "Is done away" (II Cor. 3:11).
  • "Is abolished" (II Cor. 3:13).
  • "For by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God" (Eph. 2:8).
All of us will soon come face to face with Jesus. If He should ask why I didn't keep the sabbath day holy, my answer would be: "I couldn't find any command in the New Testament to keep the sabbath day holy, and I couldn't find anyone who could find such a command -- so I just followed Your resurrected example, and your Word, and the example of the early churches."
