According To The Scriptures:

THE NEW TESTAMENT DAY OF WORSHIP

Why do saved people worship on the first day of the week? Count the reasons for yourself:
  1. FACT: Jesus was resurrected in His fleshly body on the first day of the week. "Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have" (Luke 24:39).
  2. FACT: The first earthly act of Jesus after His resurrection was to meet with His disciples (church) -- on the first day of the week (John 20:19). There is no Scriptural record of Jesus meeting with His church on the sabbath.
  3. FACT: Jesus appointed a meeting on the first day of the week -- that was why the disciples were there. The first day of the week was the day that was appointed by Jesus. "Then [on the first day of the week] the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them" (Matt. 28:16). (Young's Analytical Concordance: appointed: arranged, set in order).
  4. FACT: The Scriptures record that Jesus met with His disciples twice after His resurrection -- both times on the first day of the week. (1) "Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples [church] were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you" (John 20:19). (2) "And after eight days again his disciples church] were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you" (John 20:26).
  5. FACT: The disciples were sent by Jesus on the first day of the week. "Then said Jesus ... as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you" (John 20:21).
  6. FACT:  The disciples [church] received the Holy Ghost on the first day of the week. Jesus breathed on them the Holy Ghost: "And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost" (John 20:22).
  7. FACT: After the ascension of Jesus, the disciples (church) continued to meet upon the first day of the week. "And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them ..." (Acts 20:7).
  8. FACT: First day of the week -- a direct command to the church at Corinth. "Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him ..." (I Cor. 16:2).
  9. FACT: The last recorded message of Jesus before Pentecost was pertaining to the kingdom of God (Acts 1:3). The kingdom of God began to be preached after the law had ceased as a rule of faith and practice (Luke 16:16).
  10. FACT: Pentecost was on the first day of the week (Acts 2).

Now we will see how many of these things happened on the sabbath after Christ's resurrection.

  1. Was Jesus resurrected on the sabbath?  No!
  2. Did Jesus ever appoint (arrange, set in order) a meeting with His disciples (church) on the sabbath? No!
  3. Did Jesus breathe on the disciples (giving them the Holy Ghost) on the sabbath? No!
  4. After His resurrection, did Jesus instruct His disciples pertaining to the sabbath? No!
  5. Was Pentecost on a sabbath? No!
  6. Did the disciples meet on a sabbath for "preaching" and to "break bread"? No!
  7. Did Jesus command the church at Corinth to "lay by him in store" on the sabbath? No!
  8. Did Jesus ever even mention the keeping of the sabbath to the Gentiles? No!

WHY? The law was ended by Jesus when He was crucified!

  1. "Christ is the end of the law ..." (Rom. 10:4).
  2. "And the law is not of faith" (Gal. 3:12).
  3. "But that no man is justified by the law"(Gal. 3:11).
  4. The law is "done away" (II Cor. 3:11).
  5. The law is "abolished" (II Cor. 3:13).
  6. Nailed to His cross (Col. 2:14)
  7. This included holy days and sabbath days (Col. 2:16).
  8. "Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law" (Rom. 3:28).

All of the above Scripture quotes are inspired by the Holy Spirit; e.g., "is done away" (II Cor. 3:11); "abolished" (II Cor. 3:13). But no one can find even one small statement ever made, after Christ arose, to keep any day holy -- and this includes the sabbath day!

We are promised everlasting life if we believe on Jesus.

  1. "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life" (John 6:47).
  2. "For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus" (Gal. 3:26).
  3. "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God" (Rom. 8:14).
  4. "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32).
  5. "For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ" (John 1:17).
  6. Moses' law blinds (II Cor. 3: 14-15).
